The dissertation project focuses on the world map completed in 1459 by the Venetian Camaldolese monk Fra Mauro. The aim is to elaborate on the details of the conception of Africa within the framework of the history of ideas, placing particular emphasis on questions concerning the recording and structuring of space and its order. The analysis will be carried out in comparison with narrative and other pictorial sources and will also take into account Islamic cartography of Africa in the 15th century. The dissertation is limited to the extremely dynamic image of Africa in the 15th century, when exploration of Africa and exchange with its inhabitants extended far to the south and there was increased interest in this continent before the focus of cartographers and navigators shifted to America with the expansion of the European world.
