Freedom – Justice – Violence

The Department of Medieval Studies at TU Darmstadt hostes the conference “Late Medieval Protest Movements and the ”Peasants' War“ of 1525 in Comparison”.

The late medieval history of Western and Central Europe is marked by numerous urban and rural uprisings. Between 1500 and 1525 alone, no less than 18 uprisings took place, culminating in the so-called “Peasants' War” of 1525. Alongside many smaller revolts, the Jacquerie in France and the Peasants' Revolt in England are regarded as important milestones.

Given this wave of unrest, questions arise about parallel or divergent developments, about types of progression with regard to the uniqueness of individual uprisings as well as about possibly similar causes, structures and processes.

The events of 1525 will be examined with the help of a comparative approach.

The conference takes place from 26. – 28.10.23.

Venue: Conference Centre of the UNESCO World Heritage Monastery Lorsch
