Innovative analytical tool for interdisciplinary studies on nature-induced disasters

The Icelandic eruptions of Eldgjá (939–40 AD) and Laki (1783–84 AD) served as case studies.

Our colleague Stephan Ebert and Katrin Kleemann (Bremerhaven) have developed an innovative analytical tool for interdisciplinary studies on nature-induced disasters, using the Icelandic 939-940 CE Eldgjá and 1783-1784 CE Laki eruptions as case studies. The historical-critical approach provides fresh insights into what constitutes reliable sources from societal archives and demonstrates how natural and human-made factors influenced these events. This work offers differentiated insights into how past societies were affected by natural impacts and their coping mechanisms. We hope it will inspire further interdisciplinary research and deepen our understanding of historical nature-induced disasters.
