New release: Fluvio-social metabolism as a bridging concept
Now available as a citable preprint on a repository of the Deutsche Archäologische Institut
2025/05/19 by Gerrit Jasper Schenk
The publication „Fluvio-sozialer Metabolismus als Brückenkonzept mittlerer Reichweite. Ein Vorschlag zur Untersuchung der Fluvialen Anthroposphäre" by Iris Nießen, Gerrit J. Schenk, Marcel Schön treats a bridging concept that was developed as a proposal for interdisciplinary studies of human impact on floodplain landscapes.

Focusing on historical and archaeological aspects, the article aims to provide a contribution to the consolidation of results from several disciplines by using various terms discussed in socio-ecological and environmental science research.
Based on the transformation of a floodplain landscape through material flows, the focus is on the linking of material processes and social developments, reflected in evaluations and certain control mechanisms of the metabolism and determining its respective characteristics.
The paper has been developed as part of the sub-projects ‘Local Pathways to the Fluvial Anthroposphere at Echaz (Rhine) and Eger (Danube)’, ‘Deciphering the Fluvio-Social Metabolism of the Upper Rhine (DEMUR)’ and ‘The River Weschnitz Fluvioscape and its Interaction with the Lorsch Abbey’ of the DFG Priority Programme 2361 ‘On the Way to the Fluvial Anthroposphere’ of the DFG. It is due to appear in print at the end of 2025.
