The life path of Michael Evenarí
Michael Evenarí was born on 9.10.1904 in Metz as Walter Schwarz. Since his parents confessed to Germany in 1919, they were expropriated and moved to the vicinity of Marburg. Michael's older brother was killed in the world war. In 1923, he began studying botany in Frankfurt, where in 1926 he submitted a dissertation on the leaf development of Ligustrum vulgare and Plectranthus fruticosum and the theory of periclinical chimeras. Afterwards he worked as an assistant in Prague and Frankfurt am Main, before he changed to the Botanical Institute at the Technical University of Darmstadt. He was supported by Prof. B. Huber, who also supervised his habilitation about the structural changes of sproutless leaf cuttings and their causes. However, the habilitation procedure in Darmstadt was not completed: after he had given his trial lecture in February 1933, he was dismissed without notice as a Jew on April 1, 1933. He immediately decided to emigrate, and left Darmstadt and Germany with his first wife.
His scientific oeuvre has three main focuses
1.) survival of plants in their natural habitats
2.) germination physiology and
3) the reconstruction and rebuilding of runoff rainwater farms in the Negev desert.
With the latter research on an archaeological-experimental basis, he made a significant contribution to modern Israeli desert agriculture.
