1989 – 2001
Studium der Geschichte und Klassischen Archäologie in Heidelberg, Siena und Berlin. Magister artium (Universität Heidelberg, 1996) und Promotion (Universität Stuttgart, 2001) in mittelalterlicher Geschichte.
2001 – 2008
Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter in einem Forschungsprojekt am Historischen Seminar der Universität Heidelberg über Herrschertreffen als Ritual und an der Heidelberger Akademie der Wissenschaften (Forschungsstelle Deutsches Rechtswörterbuch) im Bereich der digital humanities. Nach Stationen als Wissenschaftlicher Assistent an der Gesamthochschule Universität Essen und der Universität Stuttgart Forschungsaufenthalte in Frankreich und Italien mit Stipendien der Deutschen Historischen Institute Paris und Rom. Forschungsstipendium der Gerda Henkel-Stiftung für eine Arbeit über Katastrophen im Oberrhein- und Arnotal im Spätmittelalter.
2008 – 2012
Leiter einer Nachwuchsforschergruppe über "Cultures of disaster“ im Heidelberger Exzellenzcluster „Asia and Europe“.
2009
Berufung zum Professor für Geschichte des Mittelalters am Institut für Geschichte der Technischen Universität Darmstadt.

2023-2029: Member of the Steering Comittee DFG-Priority Programme 2361 “On the way to the Fluvial Anthroposphere”
2023-2026: Principal Investigator of the following DFG-projects within the SPP 2361 Fluvial Anthroposphere:
- The River Weschnitz Fluvioscape and its Interaction with the Lorsch Abbey
- Local pathways to the Fluvial Anthroposphere at Echaz (Rhine) and Eger (Danube). A comparative analysis from c. AD 1100 to 1800
- Deciphering the fluvio-social metabolism of the Upper Rhine area – Factors and actors in the transformation towards a fluvial anthroposphere prior to the industrial period
