The workshop is co‑organised by the HDSM Team in close collaboration with academic partners from several universities (see below for further details).

The workshop addresses blind spots in the histories of digital history by incorporating narratives from the Nordic countries, the Soviet Union, and countries of the Eastern Bloc. It aims to fill gaps created by an overemphasis on the United States and Western Europe. The core question is how the local and the transnational intersected in the technology‑inflected reshaping of historical research practices, and how political backgrounds, contexts, and constraints fed into this process.

An open lecture byAlan Colin-Arce (University of Victoria)

About the speaker: Alan Colin-Arce is a researcher at the University of Victoria’s Electronic Textual Culture Lab. He recently completed a master’s in sociology at the University of Victoria. He researches the influence of language and geography in knowledge production, especially in web archives and scholarly communication. He was part of one of the teams of the Archives Unleashed cohorts, working as a researcher on the project Latin American Women’s Rights Movements: Tracing Online Presence through Language, Time and Space.

On 9th July, Prof. Julianne Nyhan gave a lecture on “Mixed-methods Digital Oral History: Reflections on Limits, Horizons and Emerging Findings” as a part of the „Digital History“-Forschungskolloquiums.

It explores the possibilities and issues that attend the take-up of digital methods in oral history with particular focus on AI-based approaches. The first project, Mixed-Methods Digital Oral History, funded by the DFG-AHRC bilateral initiative, integrates Semantic Web and AI technologies with historical-interpretative analysis to better understand narratives of formation, disruption, and change in the history of computing in the humanities. The second, Multimodal Digital Oral History (Smyth, Nyhan, and Flinn 2023), develops methodologies and technical workflows for engaging with the full range of oral history modalities—transcripts, sound, waveforms, and metadata—across both retro-digitised and born-digital collections.

HDSM is delighted to announce that the registration for the workshop “History of Digital History between East and West” is now open.

In histories of digital history, as in digital humanities in general, much emphasis has been placed on the two commonly recognized centers of the development of historical computing since the 1950s: the United States and Western Europe. As a result, crucial developments elsewhere have been overlooked, including in the Nordic countries as well as the Soviet Union and the various states of the Eastern bloc. HDSM freut sich, die neue Runde des Oberseminars im kommenden Wintersemester 2025/26 ankündigen zu können.

Was? Das Oberseminar ist ein Forum für die Präsentation und Diskussion aktueller Forschungsergebnisse an der Schnittstelle zwischen digitalen Methoden und Daten in den Bereichen Digital History und Digital Humanities. Wann? Es handelt sich um eine wöchentliche Veranstaltung von Mitte Oktober 2025 bis Mitte Februar 2026, die dienstags von 16:15 bis 17:55 Uhr stattfindet. Wo? Das Oberseminar wird in einem hybriden Format stattfinden. Die Präsentationen werden aufgezeichnet und auf den Medienkanälen der HDSM veröffentlicht, um eine dauerhafte Wiedergabe des Symposiums zu gewährleisten. Für die Online-Teilnahme am Seminar ist eine Anmeldung erforderlich. Der Anmeldelink wird kurz vor dem Tag der ersten Vorlesung bereitgestellt.
